Who should attend?

This course is designed for people wishing to renew an existing First Aid at Work certificate. If your certificate has expired, you are still able to attend this course, but the HSE recommends you attend the First Aid at Work (3-day course) if more than a month has elapsed since expiry. Please note that the requalification course is an intensive course with very little practice time and is designed for people whose certificate is still valid. If you do decide to attend the requalification course, you will need to work at the pace of the course.

Topics covered in the First Aid at Work Requalification course:

The Role of a First Aider

Use of equipment

The importance of recording incidents and actions

Basic hygiene and preventing cross-infection

The priorities of first aid

Assessing and managing incidents

Treatment of an unconscious casualty

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)

Wounds and bleeding

Minor injuries, including small cuts, grazes, bruises, and small splinters

Dressings, including bandages and slings

Head, chest, and eye injuries

Fractures and muscular injuries

Burns and scalds

Seizures / Epilepsy

Anaphylactic shock

Heart conditions, including heart attack, angina, and stroke.

A re-qualification course can be done up to 3 months before the certificate expiry date, and if completed, the new certificate would start from the expiry date of the last.

Assessment and Certification

You will be continually assessed throughout the duration of the course by one of our qualified trainers. Upon successful completion, you will receive a two-day First Aid at Work Requalification Certificate valid for three years.

The HSE recommends that all qualified first aiders should refresh their knowledge and first aid skills every year. We offer an on-site Annual Skills Update course, which can be delivered at your premises to up to 12 first aiders.

When booking this course, you must provide evidence that you currently hold a valid First Aid at Work certificate. This will also need to be shown to the trainer on the first day of the course.

The practical elements of this course are essential, as they provide you with vital hands-on experience. It is important that you are physically able to take part in the practical parts of the course.

The HSE requires you to attend the full duration of the course, and candidates need a basic command of English (defined as Level 2) to be eligible for evaluation and qualify for a First Aid at Work Requalification certificate.

On-site training room requirements

It is recommended that the room size should be approximately 20 x 30 feet for a full 12-person course. The room should be large enough to seat all candidates comfortably in a semicircle formation. The floor space in the centre should be clean and uncluttered, as this will be used for the practical parts of the course. The trainer will also require a flip chart, if one is available.
