Pre-requisites

The practical elements of this course are essential, as they provide you with vital hands-on experience. You must be physically able to take part in the practical parts of the course. Part of the course will be delivered in an outside environment, irrespective of the weather conditions. If delegates have an in date EFAW certificate or a paediatric qualification that could mean a short refresh on CPR.

Assessment and Certification

This course fulfils the requirements of the First Aid element of the expedition syllabus, and it is
suitable for the Bronze, Silver, and Gold Duke of Edinburgh awards. A three-year Level 3 Award in
Outdoor First Aid will be issued subject to successful assessment. A range of methods is used,
including practical and questioning (open and multiple-choice). Ofqual (The Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation) in England regulates the qualification itself. The Institute for Outdoor Learning (IOL) heavily influences and supports the course content and standards, providing guidance that many providers follow (often at Band 3 for 16-hour courses). This is particularly relevant for working in remote settings or seeking National Governing Body (NGB) instructor awards.

On-site training room requirements

It is recommended that the room size should be approximately 20 x 30 feet for a full 12-person course. The room should be large enough to seat all candidates comfortably in a semicircle formation. The floor space in the centre should be clean and uncluttered, as this will be used for the practical parts of the course. The trainer will also require a flip chart, if one is available.
