Pre-requisites

The practical elements of this course are essential, as they provide vital hands-on experience. Learners must be physically able to take part in all practical activities.

Part of the training will take place outdoors, regardless of weather conditions, so suitable clothing and footwear are required.

If you already hold a valid Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) or Paediatric First Aid qualification, this may allow for a shorter CPR refresher element.

Assessment and Certification

This course fulfils the requirements of the First Aid element of the Duke of Edinburgh Award syllabus (Bronze, Silver, and Gold).

Learners will receive a Level 3 Award in Outdoor First Aid (valid for 3 years), subject to successful assessment.

Assessment is through a mix of practical activities and questioning (both open and multiple-choice).

The qualification is regulated by Ofqual and supported by the Institute for Outdoor Learning (IOL).

Note on IOL Standards:

1-Day (8 hours) – Meets IOL Band 2 standard. Suitable for outdoor enthusiasts or support roles.

2-Day (16 hours) – Meets IOL Band 3 standard. Required by most National Governing Bodies (NGBs) for instructors, leaders, and those working in remote settings (more than 30 minutes from professional help).

On-site training room requirements

It is recommended that the room size should be approximately 20 x 30 feet for a full 12-person course. The room should be large enough to seat all candidates comfortably in a semicircle formation. The floor space in the centre should be clean and uncluttered, as this will be used for the practical parts of the course. The trainer will also require a flip chart, if one is available.
